The Jewish Genetic Discovery Foundation (JGDF)

Mission and Purpose

The Jewish Genetic Discovery Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing public knowledge of Jewish history through genetic research, education, and community engagement. As a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, we address significant scientific and social needs including:

• Lack of awareness about what genetic testing does, what we already know, and what we need to learn more
• Lack of clarity in interpreting genetic results in the context of ancestry
• Unknown deep roots of and relations between historical Jewish communities
• Mistrust of genetic testing within Jewish communities
• Severe under-representation of most historical Jewish communities in current genetic databases

Core Activities and Implementation

1. Encouraging Voluntary and Informed Participation:
   • Communicating the financial, privacy, and ethical considerations of various genetic sequencing options
   • Clarifying limitations and managing expectations about what genetic testing can and cannot reveal
   • Devoting research focus to genetic testing for ancestry purposes, as opposed to medical genetics
   • Providing guidance on potential ramifications of testing, including unexpected or surprising results
   • Commitment to supporting participants through the entire testing process: before, during, and after results
2. Research Support and Funding:
   • Targeting genetic research opportunities with high scientific and historical impact
   • Prioritizing testing for historically understudied or underrepresented Jewish communities
   • Identifying high-leverage research targets that maximize knowledge gains
   • Exploring the deep genealogical connections between historical and modern Jewish communities
3. Education and Dissemination:
   • Developing accessible resources to communicate research findings
   • Hosting an open-access, de-identified database of Jewish genetic lineages online
   • Facilitating community workshops, public presentations, and informational events
   • Translating and synthesizing scientific discoveries into layman’s terms, especially in the context of history and genealogy
   • Providing educational materials on navigating testing platforms and understanding results
4. Data Stewardship and Privacy:
   • Commitment to transparency while maintaining privacy for sample providers
   • Sharing metadata in both raw form and in historically/culturally relevant terms
   • Implementing robust privacy protections for all participant data
   • Developing scalable approaches for responsibly managing increasing amounts of genetic data
5. Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
   • Partnering with historians, scientists, and genealogists to integrate genetic data into broader historical narratives
   • Fostering interdisciplinary dialogues that enrich historical, genealogical, and cultural understandings
6. Research Focus Areas:
   • Characterizing genetic diversity within understudied Jewish ethnic groups
   • Tracing historical-genetic connections among Jewish communities
   • Investigating the origins of specific Jewish diaspora populations
   • Examining the legacy of ancient Jewish and Israelite ancestry in modern Jewish communities

   • Recognizing that this is fundamentally a community engagement project with academic components
   • Committing to regular reporting of results in accessible formats

Through these combined efforts, JGDF aims to enhance awareness of and foster informed engagement in genetic science, and to strengthen community bonds through a deeper understanding of Jewish heritage and identity.
